We love to read.
We own a lot of books.
We also own an online bookshop. Handy right?!
But we realise that not everyone has spare money right now, and when you do, there are so many books to choose from and you don't want to waste your money. So, Scott and I thought we would do a monthly book review so our customers could find out a bit more information on a particular title and decide if it was for their shelves or not.
For our seventh book review Tie Shares her thoughts on Concise Textbook of Small Animal Handling. A Practical Handbook by C. B. Chastain.
This isn’t going to be everyone’s idea of a gripping read. The Concise Textbook of Small Animal Handling. A Practical Handbook by C. B. Chastain was published in 2022 by CRC Press. The book is a softcover with a bound spine. The Concise Textbook of Small Animal Handling is just that – a textbook to aid with wildlife carers, vets, snake catchers etc – anyone in the field of handling small animals. The animals covered are dogs, cats, small mammals, companion birds and some reptiles. The topics vary per animal, but safe animal handling and safe restraining, the risks involved in transmission of diseases, ethical concerns, typical behaviour, social dominance, resistance behaviours, animal hierarchy, health, equipment needed and transportation are among the topics covered in this book.
The Concise Textbook of Small Animal Handling contains 222 pages of text, diagrams and tables. While it is an American publication, it is applicable to our wildlife as well. (Dogs, cats, mice, rats, guinea pigs, sugar and squirrel gliders, rabbits, and ferrets.) The text is in English, and the illustrations are black and white. Whilst I am not personally a fan of these spines (I always catch my sleeves – although these seem to be better than a lot I’ve come across), the information for wildlife carers mostly is fantastic. Whilst human safety is foremost there are a few chapters I wouldn’t personally use, but for the most part it is a valuable resource.
