Amphibians & Reptiles of Durango, Mexico by Julio A. Lemos Espinal, Geoffrey R. Smith &  Rosaura Valdez Lares.

The state of Durango, Mexico, posses nearly all vegetation types existing in Mexico, with the exception of tropical evergreen forests. This is owing to the complex physiography of the state, which encourages a large mixture of climates and an impressive heterogeneity of habitats. Another contributing factor for the high biodiversity range of Durango is the Tropic of Cancer. This is the line that influences the division of the subtropics and temperate zones. These remarkable traits of the state of Durango have aided in the presence of a high diverseness of amphibian and reptile species. Over 100 mammal species are encountered in this area as well. As of today, a total of 157 species of amphibians and reptiles is found in Durango, three of them are introduced species. Out of this number, 36 species are amphibians  -33 anurans, 3 salamanders, and the remaining are reptiles - 5 turtles, 54 lizards, and 62 snakes. Data on every species that lives in Durango is given throughout this book, which also includes a concise introduction, an outline of the  herpetological studies previously done in Durango, a narrative of the physiographic characteristics of the state, and also a summary of the conservation status of each of the amphibian and reptile species that inhabits the state.
